Himayat Imam Pasand
-> also known as Himayuddin or Himayat or Humayun Pasand. Imam Pasand is delicious large mango that tempts your taste buds with smooth, juicy, sweetness. Known for its pleasant delicious taste, it is considered a leading contender for “King of Mangoes”. The name origin of Imam Pasand is from Urdu which translates as ‘Imam’s Favorite’. Merriam-Webster dictionary defines Imam as “a title of various Muslim leaders, especially of one succeeding Muhammad as leader…”. Pasand means favorite. It is also believed that this is cherished mango of Mughal emperor Humayun and was called Humayun Pasand for this reason. The names suggest royal origins and it is said to have been the fruit of choice for Moghul’s royalty.
This variety should have probably migrated via Andhra Pradesh/Telangana to Tamil Nadu. In Tamil Nadu, Salem, Dhramapuri, Krishnagiri, Kuttralam and Tiruchirappalli (Trichy) has many Imam Pasand Growers. In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, it is widely grown as well. Season for Imam ranges between Mid-April and Mid-June. In some parts of Tamil Nadu, Imam season starts as early as March.
Since Imam is a big mango with a thin seed, it offers more pulp to consume which gives monies worth. Imam Pasand is predominantly grown in Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh states in India.
